What is Underline Font?

Want a clean line sitting under your text without touching a bold button or a stylesheet? Underline Font does it by appending Unicode’s combining character U+0332, the Combining Low Line, after each non-space character. The mark renders a low line directly beneath the glyph it follows, so r̲e̲a̲d̲ t̲h̲i̲s̲ arrives underlined as genuine characters — not formatting that disappears when copied.

Below The Glyph, Not Through It

The technique mirrors strikethrough exactly, with one key difference in placement. Strikethrough’s U+0336 cuts across the middle of a letter to mean deleted; this style’s U+0332 sits underneath, which the eye reads as a link or emphasis instead. Same combining-mark mechanism, opposite signal — one cancels text, the other quietly draws attention to it.

The Descender Quirk

Letters with tails that drop below the baseline — g, y, p, j — can crowd the low line on certain fonts, occasionally almost touching it. This is a normal consequence of where descenders fall relative to the underline mark and varies by typeface. It stays perfectly legible; the line just sits tighter against those specific letters than against rounder ones.

Links, Hashtags And Retro Vibes

An underline reads as something worth clicking, so it works for link-style emphasis, underlined hashtags, and headers that need weight without going bold. It also nails a retro forum or BBS aesthetic where plain underlined text once meant importance. Because the line is built into the characters, v̲i̲s̲i̲t̲ p̲r̲o̲f̲i̲l̲e̲ keeps its underscore through every copy and paste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this place the line above or below the text?

Below. The U+0332 combining mark sits directly beneath each glyph, producing a true underline. That position is what makes it read as a link or emphasis rather than as crossed-out, deleted content.

Why do letters like g and y look cramped against the line?

Those letters have descenders that drop toward the baseline, so on some fonts they sit very close to the low line. It is a normal typeface-dependent behaviour and the text stays clearly readable despite the tight spacing.

Will the underline survive being pasted elsewhere?

Yes. The line comes from combining characters built into the text itself, not from app formatting, so it remains attached when you copy the styled text into bios, posts, messages and most other input fields.

Can I underline numbers and symbols, not just words?

You can. The low-line mark attaches to whatever character precedes it, so digits and punctuation get underlined just like letters, which is useful for hashtags, codes and mixed strings.

How does this compare to the strikethrough style?

They share the same combining-mark approach but use different marks. Underline puts U+0332 beneath the glyph for emphasis, while strikethrough runs U+0336 through it to signal deletion — same method, opposite meaning.
