Frequently Asked Questions
How do flag emojis work?
Flag emojis are made of two "Regional Indicator" Unicode characters. For example, the US flag (🇺🇸) is the regional indicator for U combined with the regional indicator for S. When supported, your device renders them as a single flag image.
Why do some flags show as letters on my computer?
Most desktop Chrome on Windows does not include flag emoji by default — flags render as the underlying letter pairs (e.g., "US" with boxes). All modern iPhones, Android phones, Macs, and Windows 11 versions support flag emoji. If you copy a flag from this page and paste it on a phone, it will display correctly even if your computer shows letters.
Where can I use flag emojis?
Anywhere that supports Unicode — Instagram bios, TikTok captions, Discord display names, WhatsApp messages, X/Twitter posts, gaming usernames (where allowed), and most other apps. Flag emojis count as 2 characters in most platforms because they're technically a pair of regional indicators.
Why isn't there a flag for [my region]?
This page uses the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes that have corresponding Unicode flag emoji. Some regions, subdivisions, and historical flags don't have official Unicode representations (yet). For example, sub-national flags like state or province flags are not standardized in Unicode.
